Oh, look, another animated film about… something. 'Chimney Town: Frozen in Time.' Sounds… dramatic. Apparently, this is a sequel to that Poupelle movie. I vaguely remember some people getting overly emotional about it. Now they're showing off a "Thousand-Year Fortress" in a new video. Riveting. I suppose if you're into that whole whimsical, slightly melancholic aesthetic, this might be your cup of tea. Just don't expect me to be swept away by the sheer existential dread of a thousand-year-old… whatever this fortress is.
Seriously though, I'm trying to muster some enthusiasm here, but it's a struggle. A fortress that's a thousand years old? What is it, made of petrified nostalgia? I'm willing to bet it's just another visually stunning backdrop for some contrived plot about finding hope or overcoming adversity. Because that's what these films always do, right? They're pretty, they're vaguely sad, and then everything magically resolves itself. Don't fall for the hype, people.
The film is slated to open in Japan on March 27th. So, if you have absolutely nothing better to do with your time, and you enjoy staring at beautifully rendered CGI for two hours, then by all means, go see it. Just don't come crying to me when you realize it was all just a pretty distraction. I, for one, have more important things to… ignore.
"A 'Thousand-Year Fortress'? Sounds like a great place to leave all your unread manga. Definitely not going to be emotionally invested in this one. Nope." — The Tsundere Critic
