Oh, look, another magical girl anime. Or witch anime. Whatever. They announced some casting for Witch Hat Atelier. Honestly, the premise sounds a little… standard. A young girl discovering magic and the like. I suppose it’s fine if you’re into that sort of predictable fantasy. Still, it’s always interesting to see how they adapt these popular manga, even if the themes are worn thinner than a cheap cloak.
However, they’ve brought in Kotono Mitsuishi. That’s… a name I recognize. She’s been around. I suppose that’s a point in their favor. Her voice can certainly carry a character, and if they’ve cast her as Alaira, one hopes the character has some depth beyond just being a plot device. The released visual shows her looking rather… regal. Perhaps there's more to this than just sparkly spells and friendship lessons after all. It’s not enough to make me jump for joy, but it’s certainly enough to pique my… reluctant interest.
I’ll reserve judgment. It’s easy to get swept up in the hype for any new anime, especially one with a visually rich source material like Witch Hat Atelier. But until I see how Mitsuishi’s performance elevates the character and how the story unfolds beyond the initial magical discovery, I’m going to remain cautiously… observant. Don't expect me to start knitting enchanted scarves anytime soon, though.
"Mitsuishi? Hmm, I suppose that's a decent choice. Let's just hope the character isn't as bland as my initial assessment of this whole 'witch' thing." — The Tsundere Critic
