After weeks of anticipation, I finally got my hands on the 'Project Neon Serpent' beta, and let me tell you, the neon-drenched streets of Neo-Kyoto are as captivating as the trailers promised. This open-world RPG, directly inspired by the cyberpunk anime of the same name, has some serious potential, but it's not without its rough edges.
The world-building is phenomenal. The rain-slicked streets, the towering holographic advertisements, the gritty underbelly – it all screams authentic cyberpunk. The combat system is fluid, blending stylish melee attacks with a surprisingly deep gunplay mechanic. Playing as a cybernetically enhanced detective, the narrative choices already feel weighty, hinting at a branching story that could keep players engaged for hours. However, the AI can be a bit… predictable at times. Enemy patrols sometimes feel like they're on a set loop, and some of the dialogue, while fitting the noir aesthetic, occasionally veers into cliché. Performance-wise, I encountered a few frame rate drops in densely populated areas. It's a strong foundation, no doubt, and the core gameplay loop is incredibly addictive. If the developers can iron out these kinks, 'Project Neon Serpent' could very well be the definitive anime-inspired RPG experience we’ve been waiting for.
