Honestly, I don't usually fall for these 'enemies to lovers' or 'opposite attract' garbage. It's all so predictable, isn't it? But even I have to admit, watching Azuma get himself into yet another mess, it's almost painful. And then, the unbelievable happens. Taira, who usually seems to be running on pure, unadulterated annoyance, actually manages to say something that makes a modicum of sense. A fleeting moment, sure, but a moment nonetheless. It's enough to make you wonder if there's more going on behind those exasperated eyes than we've been led to believe.
Is this a sign of character development, or just a fluke? Frankly, I'm leaning towards fluke. These anime characters are so prone to their own dramatic arcs, it’s exhausting. However, for Taira to cut through Azuma's latest brand of self-inflicted misery with such a pointed remark... it's almost charming, in a deeply irritating way. It’s the kind of thing that makes you roll your eyes, but then secretly acknowledge that maybe, just maybe, the writers aren't *entirely* phoning it in. Don't get me wrong, I'm still not holding my breath for a rom-com to suddenly materialize, but this episode certainly threw a wrench into the usual predictable gears.
This kind of emotional whiplash is precisely what keeps you coming back, even when you tell yourself you shouldn't. You're presented with one thing, then BAM, a tiny spark of something else. It's a good thing the animation didn't suddenly go full-on glitter explosion to match the sudden sense of... well, *something*. Still, the sheer audacity of Taira having a cogent thought when Azuma is at his lowest is almost enough to make me crack a smile. Almost.
"Ugh, a moment of sense from Taira? Don't tell me they're actually trying to make me *care* about these two. It's not going to work... probably." — The Tsundere Critic
