Oh, great. Another stage play. Honestly, I don't get the appeal of these live-action adaptations for things that are already so visually distinct. 'Mononoke' is known for its unique art style and atmosphere, so I'm skeptical about how they plan to translate that to the stage. Still, if they managed to capture the essence of the Medicine Seller’s investigations, maybe it won’t be a complete disaster.
The prequel promises to delve into the backstory, which is… fine. I suppose it’s better than a half-hearted sequel. The cast and a new key visual have been unveiled, and while I'm not overly invested, I can appreciate the effort if it's done with some actual care. It’s running at the Shinagawa Prince Hotel from May 14-17. Don't expect me to be there camping out for tickets, though.
Look, I’m not saying it will be bad, but I’m certainly not expecting a revelation. If they can manage to evoke some of that classic 'Mononoke' creepiness and intrigue without resorting to cheap tricks, then perhaps it’s worth a grudging glance. But let’s be real, the original anime is where the true magic lies.
"A stage play for Mononoke? I suppose... if they don't ruin it with cheesy acting, it might be... tolerable. But don't expect me to be impressed." — The Tsundere Critic
